The development of this "new" kind of magazine was brought about by the editor's discontent with current women's lifestyle magazines. Even though she considers herself a fan of publications such as Cosmopolitan, Shape and Germany's Freundin, the abundance of advertisement for all things glittering, exclusive and expensive as well as the focus on superficiality and the 'systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods or services in even greater amounts' sparked a craving for a paradigm shift. The title SOFIA is deliberately being followed by The Zeitgeist Lifestyle Magazine because it is this magazine's purpose to highlight the cultural, ethical, intellectual, spiritual, and political climate of our society, point out its weaknesses, create a platform where improvements can be discussed and especially to advertise equality rather than social exclusion.
SOFIA Magazine is non-governmental and non-profit and therefore relies on volunteers, sponsors and donors.
Launched on January 1st 2011, the magazine is still in the development phase - new elements, apps, contents and features are being added by the minute. English is the magazine's prime language, however it is possible that there will be versions in Spanish and German in the future.
